Bigger Cars, Bigger Assembly Lines
The new Chevy Blazer isn’t just a bigger and heavier version of its 2005 off-road namesake. It’s a two-row SUV crossover with a car-based unibody and rugged exterior styling. Older truck-body factories just weren’t going to cut it.
The large-size assembly lines of the Ramos Arizipe, Mexico plant that turns out the Equinox and the Cruze are perfect for the Blazer retool. The new Blazer features sharp dry-road handling and a Camaro-based exterior design that separates it from other daily driving vehicles.
It is not, however, a truck body meant for off-road use. Mexican assembly lines required only minor adjustments to put the Blazer into production. More than half the parts for the Chevy Blazer come from the United States and Canada.
The New Chevy Blazer for 2020
Disruptions in the supply chain caused production hiccups in 2019, including a brief halt in October 2019. The 2020 model is in full production and ready for delivery.
New in 2020 is the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine option that packs in 230 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. This falls between the baseline 2.5-liter inline engine and the 3.6-liter V6. The 2020 Chevy Blazer can tow up to 4,500 pounds with the 3.6-liter V6 and all-wheel drive options.
The updated color options are Iridescent Pearl Tricoat, Midnight Blue Metallic, Graphite Metallic, Nightfall Gray Metallic, Red Hot Metallic, Silver Ice Metallic, Black, Bright Blue Metallic, and Cajun Red Tricoat.

Three Engine Options
The basic Blazer powertrain setup is a 2.5-liter, 4-cylinder,193 horsepower with 188 pound-feet of torque to the front wheels. It is the most efficient of the engine options, with an estimated 22 mpg city and 27 mpg highway.
The middle option is the turbocharged 2.0-liter with 230 hp and 258 pound-feet of torque, front-wheel or all-wheel drive. The most powerful option is the 3.6-liter V6 with 308 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque delivered to the front wheels or all-wheels.
Big muscles come with tradeoffs. A V6 all-wheel-drive engine means 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway.
Car-like Ride and Extras
The nine-speed automatic transmission, controlled ride with power steering, and relaxed power delivery leave the truck-like ancestry of the Blazer behind. This is a solid, comfortable crossover SUV.
Like a car, the entertainment system is first-rate. An 8-inch screen with intuitive apps handles communication, navigation, and entertainment. The driver can save different profiles too so each driver can have their own music and app choices.
USB-connected Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard to the system. The Blazer is available with six total USB ports spread between its two rows, three of which are USB-C connections. Add the optional wireless Qi phone-charging pad for even more convenience.
Every 2019 Blazer features a standard backup camera and a rear-seat reminder. For teen drivers, the Chevy driver system allows parents to set speed alerts and audio volume limits. It will also give driving performance report cards.
Some options include Chevy’s HD Surround Vision 360-degree camera, which offers views of the area around the vehicle for low-speed maneuvering. The rear camera mirror can switch between an optical mirror and a live rear camera display. This allows a wide-angle view of the area behind the car with reduced blind spots.
Advanced options for the Blazer include lane-keeping steering assist, lane-departure alert, and blind-spot monitoring. The adaptive cruise control system works in stop-and-go traffic and maintains a safe following distance behind a lead car. It works well hand in hand with automatic pre-collision braking and pedestrian detection.
Beyond the Blazer
The Equinox is 183.1 inches long and 72.6 inches wide. It is 65.5 inches high. The cargo capacity is 29.9 cubic feet. Front-seat legroom is 40.9 inches, and the headroom is 40 inches. The back seats are near identical clearance.
Contrast this with the Blazer. It’s slightly longer, taller and wider than the Equinox. The Blazer is 191.4 inches long and 76.7 inches wide. It’s 67 inches tall. The 30.5 cubic feet of cargo space is larger too. The front-seat legroom is 41 inches, and headroom is 39.8 inches. Both the Equinox and Blazer are assembled in Mexico.
The Traverse is the largest of the three. It’s a whopping 204.3 inches long and 78.6 inches wide. It’s at 70.7 inches tall. Seats in cargo space is about the same as the Equinox, but the optional third-row seating makes up the difference. Front passengers have 41 inches of legroom and 41.3 inches of headroom, rear passengers have 38.4 inches of legroom and 40 inches of headroom.
