The days are growing shorter, the nights are getting cooler and it is almost time to head for the highway to see the fall leaves in Nebraska. Taking a ride in the autumn countryside is a great weekend activity for the whole family, from grandparents to toddlers. Stop at a farm stand and pick out a pumpkin or sip some cider. If you have a lift kit and an off-road package for your truck, you can also venture beyond the black top.

Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway

Follow in the footsteps of the famous explorers and see some of Nebraska’s most beautiful forests as the Lewis and Clark Scenic Byway travels from Omaha to Sioux City. This route takes you along the Missouri River and through the De Soto Wildlife Refuge and many state parks.

Lincoln Highway Scenic and Historic Byway

Crossing the state from east to west, the Lincoln Highway Scenic and Historic Byway travels through beautiful scenery for a pastoral drive. The road follows the original US Highway 30 and takes travelers through farmland and many of Nebraska’s original towns.

Heritage Highway of Nebraska

This route travels along the southern border of the state and also includes many historic sites. One of the best places to see fall leaves is Indian Cave State Park. This route also offers views of the autumn prairies, which have their own nuances of color this time of year.
